SALT LAKE CITY — The construction barrels are coming out and that means heavy freeway delays are expected for two major Utah thoroughfares through the weekend.

Utah Department of Transportation officials say drivers should plan ahead as lane restrictions for pavement work will likely cause a lot of unusual freeway delays on I-15 in Sandy and Salt Lake City, and on I-215 in Taylorsville Friday night through Monday morning.

Northern Utah freeway delays expected

Crews are planning to close multiple lanes on the collector ramp from southbound I-15 to 1300 South, SR-201 and I-80 Junction in Salt Lake City.

In Sandy, crews will restrict three lanes to travel on northbound I-15 from 10600 to 9000 South.

On the I-215 Belt Route in Taylorsville, only two westbound lanes will be open for drivers between Redwood Road and 5400 South.

Lane restrictions will begin at 8 p.m. Friday night.

The light at the end of the proverbial construction tunnel comes Monday morning. That’s when all lane restrictions should be lifted by 5 a.m. in time for the the morning commute. UDOT urges drivers to be patient, cautious, and while anticipating delays.

Other tips? Plan ahead to use alternate routes, especially if you’re planning travel to the airport.
