SALT LAKE CITY — Homeowners and businesses in Salt Lake City got help from clean-up crews Monday morning after a storm hit northern Utah on Sunday.

It was a storm that dropped as much water as some areas normally get in a month.

In the Avenues area of downtown Salt Lake, Richard Archuleta and Jerry Tucker were up early. Wearing their safety orange vests, this clean-up crew used shovels to pick up rocks and mud and clear the drains and gutter of storm debris.

“We’re cleaning up the gutter edges, making sure the water is flowing down,” Archuleta told KSL NewsRadio.

It turns out that, with this kind of storm, some of the debris just can’t be cleared with street sweepers.

“We’ve got brooms and are sweeping up all of the bigger stuff they can’t get,” said Tucker.

It’s clean-up work that Archuleta and Tucker said would continue through the rest of the day on Monday.

“There’s a lot here in the Avenues, and there’s a lot up in the east side, between 21st and all along Foothill,” Archuleta said.

Sunday’s storm was reminiscent of flash flooding in 2017 that filled the Sprague Library in Sugarhouse with nearly six feet of water. The new library, which was only fully reopened on May 11 of this year, experienced flooding again from Sunday’s storm.

The University of Utah and Primary Children’s Hospital also had to deal with flooding from this storm, as did homes in the Harvard, Yale and Foothill Boulevard areas of the city.
