Bryce Canyon to host NASA event

BRYCE CANYON, Utah — Bryce Canyon National Park has been selected as one of 500 locations to host the James Webb Space Telescope launch. The Webb is expected to be the biggest and most elaborate telescope ever built.
This telescope can show our universe, distant solar systems, and other galactic creations through infrared technology. It will present us with an updated view of the cosmos.
“We are thrilled that Bryce Canyon is an official host site for NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope launch community events,” Bryce Canyon Nation Park Superintendent Jim Ireland said. “Parks like Bryce Canyon are places of learning and discovery, and this mission promises to fundamentally change our understanding of the universe for this generation and many to come.”
The event will launch in Dec. 2021. The mission is happening internationally in partnership with space agencies in Europe and Canada.
To celebrate the launch, Bryce Canyon will host a day of astronomy programs on November 6th. This will include astronomy-themed activities, a presentation by Dr. Kevin Hainline, Assistant Research Professor at the University of Arizona’s Steward Observatory, and end with an evening of telescope viewing, weather permitting.
