Lawmakers pass bill allowing federal vaccine mandate exemptions

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Legislature passed a bill affording employees exemptions to the federal vaccine mandate for businesses during the second day of a special legislative session Wednesday.
KSL.com reports the bill allows for personal, medical, and religious exemptions and protects employees from retaliation if they claim one.
Sponsors of the bill, Sen. Kirk Cullimore and Rep. Mike Schultz, say the measure is not perfect. However, they believe it is a good place to start.
The legislation also prohibits employers from keeping employee vaccination records on file.
The State of Utah is a party to a lawsuit against the federal government regarding the vaccine mandate.
A federal appeals court temporarily stopped the vaccine mandate Saturday.
