11-year-old crashes step-dad’s truck into West Jordan home

WEST JORDAN, Utah — An 11-year-old girl was behind the wheel of a Ford Expedition that crashed through a fence and into a home on Sunday.

Police said the child was in the truck with her stepfather who was giving her a driving lesson. When she arrived at a neighborhood intersection she was instructed to stop, but when the vehicle began rolling she became confused and mistook the brake pedal for the gas pedal.

“The vehicle made a big wide right U-turn,” said West Jordan Police Officer Sam Winkler, “and went through a neighbor’s fence and into the house.”

The owner of the home was at the residence when the accident happened, but police say he was in a different area of the home.

There were no injuries.

Winkler said that, because the crash happened in an H-O-A neighborhood, on roads that are privately owned, no citation can be issued.
