SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah is suspending all fraternity and sorority life social activity after a second sexual assault report.

The suspension is for two weeks and is only limited to social activities. Philanthropic and chapter business can continue.

In a statement, the school says it was investigating an earlier report of a sexual assault in September when another anonymous person came forward with another report from December. The information has been shared with the police.

The school is also meeting with leaders of the fraternities and sororities on how to proceed.

“Fraternities and sororities have operated adjacent to our campus for more than 100 years. These independent organizations have been allowed to affiliate with the university with the understanding that they will serve the greater good of the campus community — building leadership, service, and community engagement skills among their members.” — Lori McDonald, Vice President for Student Affairs & Jason Ramirez, Dean of Students

Last week, the University sent a campus safety notification to all students, faculty, and staff about one of the assaults. Since then, the school received another anonymous report.

Jessica Lowell and Marc Giauque contributed to this report.
