SALT LAKE CITY — People returning home from a long holiday weekend found traveling to be problematic Monday, especially in central and southern Utah.

Problematic traveling

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) reported one big mess on I-15.

Col. Michael Rapich,of the Utah Highway Patrol, went to social media Monday evening to report conditions in southern Utah.

UDOT also reported a multi-car crash on southbound I-15 Monday night that closed the freeway at milepost 263/University Avenue in Provo. However, the lanes were reopened a short time later.

The UHP reports icy roads between Provo and Spanish Fork have led to roughly 20 incidents, creating problematic traveling. The UHP also has most of those accidents either had minor injuries or no injuries at all.

The most serious of those accidents occurred at milepost 263/University Avenue when a driver left the vehicle to look at damage and was struck by another vehicle. The condition of the individual hit was not immediately known.

Driving in the mountains

According to UDOT, the highways through Big and Little Cottonwood canyons were wet and slushy Monday evening. However, with temperatures expected drop overnight, UDOT says to expect icy conditions for the morning commute. An additional half inch of snow is expected in the lower canyon by Tuesday at 6 a.m.
