SALT LAKE CITY — If you have an interest in hunting elk or deer this fall, your last chance to obtain a permit is quickly approaching.

According to the Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR), the permits are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Additionally, individuals must have a valid hunting or combination license to buy a permit.

“If you happened to miss the big game drawing or were unsuccessful, this is your last opportunity for a chance to hunt big game in Utah this fall,” DWR Wildlife Licensing Coordinator Lindy Varney said in a news release. “Don’t forget that you can mentor a youth during these hunts, making it a great opportunity to pass on your love of the outdoors to the next generation.”

Deer permits

Permits for the general-deer hunt will be made available on Tuesday, July 19 at 8 a.m. According to the DWR, there are only 954 permits left over from the big game drawing.

There are also permits available for the youth general-season archery hunt. These permits will also be made available on Tuesday, July 19 at 8 a.m. The DWR says permits for this hunt are typically set aside each year for youth hunters.

Elk permits

Permits for the general-season archery elk hunt will be made available for purchase on Tuesday, July 12 at 8 a.m. The hunt is for both youth and adults. Permits for this hunt are unlimited, according to the DWR.

On July 14, permits for the general season of any bull elk will be made available for purchase at 8 a.m. This hunt is also for adults and youth. According to the DWR, this hunt allows hunters to harvest a bull elk using any legal weapon. Additionally, the DWR says there are an unlimited number of permits for youth, and 17,500 for adults.

You must be 17 or younger on July 31 to buy any of the youth permits.

Those interested in the general season spike bull hunt can purchase permits on Tuesday, July 26 at 8 a.m. The DWR says there are 15,000 permits available.

Purchasing a permit

Those individuals interested in buying a permit can do it online. Permits can also be purchased at any DWR office or any available license agent.
