Recent August storms are typical, we just got used to dry summers

SALT LAKE CITY — More rain is on its way to northern Utah, and if you’ve been wondering if we normally see this many storms this time of year, the short answer is “yes.” 

When it comes to this summer versus past summers, it’s not that we’re getting more storms, it’s that we’re actually getting them in the first place.

“In years past, it just hasn’t come, and that’s been a big contributor to some of the drought,” KSL Meteorologist Kevin Eubank said.

Eubank said we’re seeing these storms come when they’re supposed to but they stand out in northern Utah because of previously dry summers and a very dry July.

“Truth be told, the month of July in northern Utah was pretty pitiful for precipitation,” Eubank said.

Southern Utah, on the other hand, has seen a lot more rain than normal recently.

“Places like St. George that went 90 days plus without any precipitation ended up making up for all of that lost time,” Eubank said.

Eubank said more rain is coming to northern Utah tomorrow and Saturday, which will hopefully help us catch up a little bit.
