SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Highway Patrol is once again asking drivers to watch their speed and slow down.

In a Facebook posting on Wednesday, the UHP says “Weather is finally out of the 100s,” the post read. “Now let’s see it with your speeds.”

In the posting, there are photos of two vehicles that were pulled over for allegedly going 154 and 145 miles per hour.

Drivers slow down

So far this year, UHP reports it has pulled over 84,000 motorists for speeding. Of those, 3,500 drivers were going in excess of 100 miles per hour.

According to the UHP, a new law that went into effect on May 4. It says an individual driving at or above 105 miles per hour can be charged with reckless driving, which is a Class B misdemeanor.

If that isn’t enough, the new law also states any speed violation of 100 miles per hour or greater will see a fine increase of 150%.

“While the need for this change is unfortunate and frustrating to the majority of those who make a point to drive responsibility,” the UHP stated in a June 3 news release. “It is absolutely meant to target the threat to safety created by those who choose not to.”

According to the news release, the UHP states it has issued 12,000 citations to individuals who were driving 100 miles per hour or greater since 2020.
