SALT LAKE CITY — The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that happened in Humboldt County on August 6, 2022. The crash killed Maggie Bringhurst, age 23, of Logan, Utah.

The crash happened on I-80 near state mile marker 186, about eight miles east of Winnemucca, Nevada at 1:42 p.m., Pacific Time.

Nevada police said that a gray Toyota 4Runner was traveling westbound on I-80 in the left travel lane. They said that, for an unknown reason, the driver of the Toyota drove off the left side of the road into the center median.

The driver reportedly overcorrected to the right which caused the vehicle to overturn as it moved back across the freeway.

Maggie Bringhurst, a passenger in the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene. Bringhurst was a student in the University of Utah’s Department of Communications and was studying to be a journalist.

She was also a writer for the Daily Utah Chronicle.

Additionally, the driver was uninjured and impairment is suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash, according to Nevada Police

If you saw this accident, please call Sgt. Mitch Payne of the Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command East Multi-Disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (M.I.R.T.) at 775-753-1111. Please reference case number 2208-00377.
