SALT LAKE CITY — The United States Postal Service is preparing for the holiday rush.

On Monday, the USPS announced vital investments in technology and personnel.

The USPS says preparations for the 2022 holiday season began in January. The preparations build off of the improvements (both investments and organizational strategy) from the 2021 holiday season. These measures are part of the USPS’ 10-year strategic plan.

“Successfully delivering for the holidays is a cornerstone of our Delivering for America 10-year plan,” said Postmaster General Louis DeJoy in a news release. “Thanks to the 655,000 women and men of the Postal Service, recent investments and operational precision improvements, we are ready to be the most used delivery provider this holiday season.”

Steps taken by the United States Postal Service

In order to prepare for the 2022 holiday season, the USPS has implemented the following nationwide:

  • A total of 100,000 part time employees have been made full time employees since January 2021. That includes 41,000 part time employees switching to full time since January 2022.
  • The USPS is aggressively hiring an additional 28,000 seasonal employees.
  • Due to new package processing equipment and operational improvements, the USPS will now be able to process 60 million packages every day. During the 2021 holiday season, the USPS processed 53 million packages daily.
  • Since 2021, 249 new package processing machines have been spread across the country. In 2022, 137 machines have been installed.
  • To handle the demands of the holiday season, the USPS has leased an additional 1,900 trailers.

According to a news release, the USPS says it takes roughly 2.5 days for a piece of mail or a package to be delivered across the postal network.
