LOGAN, Utah — Utah State University has opened a new fund for mental health resources in their athletic department. The fund is in memory of football Coach Blake Anderson’s son, Robert.

The school’s website says money from the Robert Cason Anderson Mental Health and Wellness fund will enhance mental health services for student-athletes, coaches and other staff members. Those services include, “Increased mental health and wellness counseling services, educational opportunities, training and programming,” according to the website dedicated to the fund.

On the website, the school said they hope the fund will, “Increase awareness and tackle the stigma surrounding mental health challenges.”

Robert Anderson died by suicide on February 28 at the age of 21.

“He had an amazing smile that would light up a room, a quick wit and sense of humor that always guaranteed a laugh, and never missed an opportunity to hug your neck and tell you how much he loved you,” the website says.

The school is taking donations for the fund on the website.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health or thoughts of suicide, there is help. Anyone in need of help is encouraged to call 988 for the new national suicide and crisis lifeline. Additionally, Utahans are encouraged to download the SafeUT app.
