Lawyers attempt to keep suspect’s statements private, judge overrules

PROVO, Utah — A man who is accused of hitting and killing two 3-year-old boys with his vehicle earlier this year in Eagle Mountain suffered a setback in court Tuesday. Lawyers for Kent Cody Barlow argued Tuesday in court to have his statements made to police made private.
While the public doesn’t know what those statements were, the judge in the case ruled against Barlow’s lawyers. That means at some point, those statements will be made public.
Barlow’s lawyers had argued that the statement could have an impact on the fairness of a future trial. Attorneys for the local media, however, argued that this is not an extraordinary case. And it, therefore, shouldn’t be treated any different from any other case.
Barlow is accused of crashing his vehicle into a horse corral last May where the two boys had been playing, killing them both.
