SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah State Fire Marshal is reminding those celebrating Chinese New Year to do so safely.

When using fireworks ensure you’re obeying the local laws and have water on hand.

Do not try to alter or combine fireworks, use them in their original form. Never re-light fireworks.

Spectators should keep a safe distance from the ignition area. And the person igniting the firework should wear safety glasses.

The Utah State Fire Marshal wants to also remind people that alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Furthermore, only those over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type.

Lastly, never attempt to use homemade fireworks or illegal explosives.
