SALT LAKE CITY— For the second year in a row, the Salt Lake City Police Department will host a gun buy-back event at the Public Safety Building located at 475 South 300 East.

This will take place Saturday, March 25 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Detective Michael Russ with the Salt Lake City Police Department said this event is a chance to keep guns out of the hands of those who will misuse them.

“[We’re] looking forward to…allowing anybody who has firearms that they no longer want to get them off the streets and into a place where they won’t be…available to anybody who might do bad things with them,” Russ said.

On a first-come, first-serve basis, people who turn in a gun, regardless of how many, will get a $50 gift card. Those who turn in assault-style rifles, deemed eligible by on-scene staff, will get an $100 gift card.

Free gun locks will also be available for people to take home.

“We are able to give those out to people…to make sure they’re safe and…not a danger to children or somebody else who may get their hands on them,” Russ said.

Anyone who brings a firearm should make sure it’s unloaded and not near or with ammunition.

Remember to follow officer’s commands at the event. Do not exit your vehicle with a gun unless directed by an officer.

For those who can’t make it and want to turn in a gun without getting a gift card: call 801-799-3000.
