SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Transportation has announced big, and expensive, construction projects for  2023 that Utahns will need to be aware of this coming construction season. The department is also pleading with drivers to be careful when driving around all the orange cones.

“In 2023, UDOT has 217 projects scheduled to start or already under construction, with a combined value of $3.2 billion,” read a press release from UDOT.

According to the department, 1,297 work zone-related crashes took place on Utah roads in 2022. Eleven people died as a result of those crashes.

Construction zones can cause lanes to be narrowed, uneven pavement, and crews working close to traffic. Therefore, it’s important to stay alert and be careful while driving through work zones.

Some upcoming major projects from UDOT

  • Four new freeway-style interchanges will be constructed with on and off-ramps on Bangerter Highway in Salt Lake County. Construction will take place at 2700 W., 13400 S., 9800 S., and 4700 S.. The goal of this project is to eliminate stoplights. Construction is scheduled for this summer.
  • The 5600 S. interchange in Roy on I-15 near Hill Air Force Base will also be rebuilt. UDOT plans to widen 5600 S. from three lanes to five between 1900 W. and 3500 W. Also, a new trail system will be built for pedestrians and cyclists. Construction is scheduled for this summer.
  • 9000 S. between Redwood Road and 700 W. will be increased from five lanes to seven. The pavement on 9000 S. from 700 West to State Street will also be replaced, and a bike lane added to the road. Construction is scheduled for this summer.
  • Construction continues on an anticipated four-lane divided highway from Farmington to West Point. The West Davis Highway project is UDOT’s biggest current and projected project for 2023. You can count not only on those four new lanes — but 10 miles of new trails for walking and biking, too.
  • A new travel lane will be added between West Point and Clinton on SR-108 in Davis County. Also, a multi-use path will be built. Construction is scheduled to start soon — some time this spring.
  • This one’s halfway done: UDOT’s crews widened Redwood Road in Taylorsville from 6200 S. to the I-215 interchange. What’s not yet done: More lanes to be added to the eastbound and westbound on-ramps to I-215.
  • Drivers in Heber City will get a smoother side after UDOT replaces sections of concrete pavement north of Heber City. UDOT will also replace the bridge driving surface at the Mayflower exit on US-40 in Wasatch County. Construction there began last year.
  • Pleasant Grove Boulevard will get some more lanes so it’s easier to get on I-15. New turn lanes will also be built at the Pleasant Grove Boulevard/North County Boulevard intersection. Construction has already begun there.
  • Easier to see lanes are already on the way for I-15 in Utah County. Crews are redoing the lane line paint on I-15 from Payson to Lehi. You can expect this one to expand to other sections of I-15 along the Wasatch Front.
  • Some bridges in Juab County on I-15 are scheduled to get repaired this spring. The roads on two bridges will be replaced and crews will conduct various repairs on nine other bridges near Nephi.

“This is one of our biggest construction years, with major projects happening all across the state,” said Lisa Wilson, UDOT deputy director for engineering and operations, in a press release. “We are working to help people in all parts of Utah stay connected to the things they care about: family, school, work, and recreation.”
