DELTA, Utah — The Utah Republican Convention will take place Saturday at Delta High School.

Saturday’s event will help determine who the GOP nominee will be for the 2nd Congressional District seat that is being vacated by Rep. Chris Stewart. Hundreds of delegates are expected to be at the event.

Kim Cropper, chairwoman of the Millard County Republican Party, tells KSL NewsRadio that many people in the community may be surprised by the size of Saturday’s event.

“Well, a lot of them still aren’t aware,” she said. “Our local newspaper did a little story about it the other day. But I think they might be blindsided. I think most of the community is not aware that there are going to be that many people here.”

Cropper is expecting between 1,000 and 1,500 people to be in attendance Saturday. Of those, she says 950 will be delegates.

She also says Delta is an ideal place to hold the convention.

“I think that they just wanted to find a place that would be the most central possible,” she said. “And we have a pretty decent-sized sports arena here. And so, it was feasible for us to do it here.”

She says it’s rare for a community such as Delta to host something such as the Utah Republican Convention.

“It’s pretty unusual,” she said. “I’ve always gone to meetings in the northern end of the state. We’ve never had anything, as far as I know, in central Utah. It’s either been in St. George or Salt Lake, so it’s nice to be able to stay home this time.”
