SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s winter weather conditions have impacted travelers, to say the least. With avalanches closing highways, icy roads, and low visibility, winter is in full swing in the beehive state.

This weekend, as Utahns hit the road, make sure to check road updates frequently to stay informed about potential hazards.

Inclement weather and closures

As of recent updates, U.S. 89 was closed through Logan Canyon due to an avalanche blocking the road but has since been set to reopen at 10:00 A.M.

U.S. 40 to the Uintah Basin was temporarily closed near Strawberry Reservoir because of inclement weather, but it has since reopened.

Reports from Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Wright say that the closures were prompted by heavy winter weather, snow, and high winds. This led to several slide-offs and unsafe road conditions. Although conditions are expected to improve, travelers are advised to limit travel in the affected areas.

John Gleason from the Utah Department of Transportation says that while the road has been reopened, drivers should be careful about potential hazards and are advised to use alternate routes.

Highway 191 was closed 10 miles north of Helper and 8 miles south of Duchesne due to winter road conditions. The reopening was scheduled for Saturday at 6:00 am.

Highway 158 to Powder Mountain and Highway 143 to Brian Head are also closed due to the challenging weather conditions.

The traction law is currently in effect for Big Cottonwood and Little Cottonwood Canyons, as well as Highway 224 and the Empire Pass road.
