SALT LAKE CITY — It’s no secret that Stanley cups are a social media phenomenon. Target shoppers battled to get their hands on the limited edition Valentine’s Day Stanley cup, there’s not a single one left in the country.

Did you know Stanley cups, limited edition or not, contain lead?

According to CNN, a spokesperson for Stanley confirmed in the manufacturing process lead industry standard pellets are used.

That said, Stanley ensures the lead does not come in contact with your liquid. However, it could come into contact if you damage the bottom of your cup.

KSL.com reported that Stanley is not the only reusable beverage cup utilizing lead. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled 84,000 Tiblue Stainless Steel Children’s Cups in November 2023 due to levels of lead that exceeded federal guidelines.

According to the commission, there are no safe levels of lead for children. The World Health Organization reported that lead exposure in children can have serious consequences, including learning and behavioral impairment.
