Officials identify UHP trooper who fell from overpass during police activity

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Highway Patrol trooper who fell from a bridge during law enforcement activity on Tuesday has been identified.

The Utah Department of Public Safety said Trooper Steve Myer was injured as he helped Salt Lake City police deploy spikes in an attempt to stop a driver during a drug investigation.

The DPS also reported on Wednesday that Myer is in stable condition.

Around 10:24 a.m. on Tuesday, the Salt Lake City Police Department attempted to stop an SUV near 900 W North Temple Street. However, the driver took off.

At a UHP press conference on Tuesday, law enforcement did not initially pursue the vehicle. Instead, they shared the vehicle description with other local law enforcement agencies.

Shortly after, a Salt Lake City police officer spotted the vehicle near 7200 West near I-80 and attempted to stop the SUV. However, the car did not stop and hit the police vehicle, causing minor damage.

The officer inside the vehicle was not harmed.

Then, UHP troopers, including Myer, began deploying tire spikes. It was at that point that Myer fell from an overpass onto a dirt road below.

A DPS helicopter was in the area, assisting with locating the suspect. Myer was transported by the helicopter in serious condition to a local hospital, the DPS website reported.

He is now stable and expected to recover from this incident.
