Gov. Cox not planning to veto any 2024 legislative session bills

SALT LAKE CITY — As the 2024 Utah legislative session draws to a close, Gov. Cox said he is not planning to veto any bills. 

When Gov. Cox appeared on KSL NewsRadio’s Jeff Caplan’s Afternoon News, he said he had already signed a handful of bills into law. However, he did not name any specific bills. 

The governor said that any bills he would have vetoed got worked on during the legislative session. 

“We’ve sat down, we’ve worked on them. We’ve negotiated, [and] we’ve changed them,” said Cox. “I’ll sign some bills I don’t love, but they got better.”

Additionally, Cox said that before he vetoes bills, he gives legislators an opportunity to attempt to change his mind.

“I sit down and say ‘hey, look … I’ll give you an opportunity to talk to me and convince me otherwise,” said Cox. 

Ending the 2024 Utah legislative session

Cox said he would remain with the legislators until all of the work is done. When the session has ended, he will address the House and Senate. 

The governor said he gets to thank the legislators for their hard work during that address. 

“We have an incredible legislature,” said Cox. “It’s been a great session and we’re all exhausted.”
