SALT LAKE CITY — Spring is in the air and unfortunately, that means allergies. Every year during spring, the number of patients showing up to University of Utah Health with swollen, itchy and red eyes increases.
According to U of U Health, there are a few things you can do to help.
Tips for managing spring allergies
Taking care of the area around your eyes is an important step. This includes taking off makeup and wearing sunglasses or eye protection.
Additionally, if you experience any irritation use something cold or wet instead of rubbing your eyes.
Contact lens users should consider using glasses when allergens are high.
Also, the amount of pollen floating around is highest right around early evening. Try avoiding outside exposure for too long at this time.
U of U Health said extreme eye dryness can cause permanent damage.
Fighting allergens while inside
To keep irritants at bay inside your home, U of U Health said to avoid keeping windows open too long.
Keep the use of window fans at a minimum. The fans can bring the pollen inside.
Additionally, keep dust already inside the home at a minimum.
