SALT LAKE CITY — A handful of Utah Walmart stores will host prescription drug-disposal events on Saturday, April 27. The events are part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s biannual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, according to a press release.

Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, visitors can drop off unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs for disposal at the following Walmart locations:

  • Walmart Supercenter, 1330 South and Providence Center Drive in Cedar City
  • Walmart Supercenter, 2228 W. 1700 South in Syracuse, Utah
  • Walmart Supercenter, 1959 Wall Ave. in Ogden
  • Walmart Supercenter, 1632 N. 2000 West in Clinton
  • Walmart Neighborhood Market, 5056 W. 13400 South in Herriman

“We deeply value the collaboration for efforts like this one, and it’s our goal to reduce the chances of prescription drugs being misused or abused,” said Lisa Young, Walmart’s director of Specialty Compliance and Ethics.

The press release said that law enforcement personnel will set up in the stores’ parking lots.

If you do not live near a participating Walmart, you can find a full list of participating organizations on the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day website.

Other prescription drug-disposal options

Other prescription drug-disposal options are available if you can’t make it to a local event.

The Food and Drug Administration said that permanent drop-off locations are available. Depending on your community, they could be found at retail stores such as Walmart, pharmacies or medical centers.  Additionally, you may be eligible to participate in mail-in or in-home prescription drug-disposal services.

For example, the press release said that Walmart offers an in-home disposal box for customers who fill opioid prescriptions. It is called Dispose RX.  A full list can be found on the DEA website.

Before dropping off your meds, the FDA said to remove all personal information from the bottle, which includes your name, address and date of birth.

We want to hear from you.
