Rep. Celeste Maloy talks Republican National Convention, primary election recount

SALT LAKE CITY— On the first day of the Republican National Convention, Utah Congresswoman Celeste Maloy spoke with KSL NewsRadio Tuesday about her experience in Milwaukee.

Maloy said she was able to be on the floor of the Baird Center with other Utah representatives when they pledged the state’s delegates to former President Donald Trump.
“There’s just a real optimism in the crowd, a lot of positive energy,” Maloy said. “I think everybody feels like we’re going to win back the White House.”
Maloy said she wasn’t at the Republican National Convention when the former president made his highly anticipated entrance, just two days after surviving an assassination attempt.
Despite missing him in person on Day 1, Maloy said “Trump has been handling the events of the last few days beautifully.”
An unclear future
Maloy also talked about her ongoing battle for a first full term in the U.S. House.
According to Maloy, she still doesn’t have confirmation of if she’ll be the republican nominee for Utah’s second congressional district house seat in November.
Currently, Maloy leads Colby Jenkins by just over 200 votes. However, since their vote totals are within .25% of each other, Jenkins, as it stands, will have the opportunity to request a recount following the statewide canvass next week.
Maloy is seeking her first full term in office after being elected to replace retiring Congressman Chris Stewart last November.
She spoke about the likely recount, saying she’s taking the race day by day.
“I have a lot of work to do [and] I don’t really have time to sit and worry about this,” Maloy said. “I’m solving problems for Utahns and we’ll just let the process play out.”
