Vice President Kamala Harris names Minnesota Gov. as her running mate

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Vice President Kamala Harris has named Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, according to the Associated Press. 

AP reported that the vice president is looking to gain votes in the Midwest. 

CNN reported that Walz was elected governor in 2018 and reelected in 2022. Since his election, he has expanded social welfare programs in Minnesota. He has also increased protections for workers who choose to unionize, among several other accomplishments. 

AP called Walz’s accomplishments as governor “ambitious.” 

Kamala Harris to introduce running mate 

AP reported that Harris is expected to introduce Walz at a rally on Tuesday evening. It will be held in Philadelphia. 

The Harris campaign had planned to make the announcement before the rally. However, the source who spoke to AP said the timing of the announcement was unclear. 

Harris secures spot as Biden’s replacement

She was the only eligible candidate to compete to replace President Joe Biden in the 2024 election. The Democratic National Committee made the announcement on July 30. 

According to AP, Democratic party rules say that candidates must submit a notarized declaration of candidacy. Then, they must meet all of the legal requirements to serve as president and get electronic signatures from at least 300 delegates. 

Of those signatures, only 50 or fewer can come from one delegation. Harris received 3,923 delegate signatures. 

At the upcoming Democratic National Convention, the party will participate in a “roll call” vote on the convention floor. Per AP, Harris and her running mate will make acceptance speeches.
