MIDVALE — A 16-year-old was killed in a car accident in the area of 7200 South 800 East on Saturday, Midvale Mayor Dustin Gettel confirmed on Facebook. A passenger was also left in critical condition.
The mayor said the 16-year-old was a student at Hillcrest High School.
The Unified Police Department said the accident happened at 12:48 p.m. The department said an SUV was heading west on Fort Union Boulevard when it hit a parked semi-truck. Police confirmed the driver was killed, and a 19-year-old passenger was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
“The Unified Police Department extends their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,” the police department said.
Police said their initial investigation showed the driver swerved to avoid avoid another vehicle, but lost control in wet road conditions, hitting the back of the semi.
“Let’s come together as a community, lean on one another, and cherish every moment we have with those we love,” Gettel said. “Hold them close and never take a single day for granted.”
The identities of the occupants were not immediately released.
The office of the Midvale mayor later released the following statement:
If your student is struggling to process this tragedy, please know that support is available. The Canyons School District offers resources to help students and families during difficult times. Don’t hesitate to call Hillcrest at 801-826-6000, or email Principal McCann at Brenda.McCann@canyonsdistrict.org.
