SALT LAKE CITY – A wrong-way driver was killed Sunday afternoon after crashing head-on with another vehicle, causing a third vehicle to crash and closing northbound lanes of Interstate 15.
A wrong-way driver in a blue Toyota Camry was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 80, according to Cpl. Luis Silva with the Utah Highway Patrol. The driver then began traveling southbound in northbound lanes of Interstate 15, Silva said.
Near 700 South, the wrong-way driver reportedly crashed head-on with an Audi and suffered fatal injuries.
The driver of the Audi was reportedly taken to a hospital in stable condition.
A third vehicle, a gray Hyundai, was reportedly “sideswiped” by the wrong-way driver, Silva said. The driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.
Northbound lanes of I-15 are closed. Initially, UDOT estimated I-15 would re-open at 3:30 p.m. That was later delayed to 5 p.m.
Traffic is being diverted off 600 South in Salt Lake City.
