Severe thunderstorm warning issued along Wasatch Front

SALT LAKE CITY – Mother Nature is making an appearance this Mother’s Day, as the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning across portions of Utah.
The National Weather Service Salt Lake City office issued a severe thunderstorm warning until approximately 3:15 p.m. Sunday for Salt Lake City, West Valley City, and Ogden.

The NWS said strong winds should be expected, and small hail would be “the main threats this afternoon and evening.”
Near Clive and Knolls, the NWS said wind could get up to 70 miles per hour. The severe thunderstorm warning is prolonged until approximately 3:15 p.m. in those areas.

A severe thunderstorm watch will remain in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday, the NWS said. Residents are advised to secure outdoor furniture and seek shelter if thunder is heard.

The warning comes after the state’s warmest day of the year occurred Saturday, when temperatures reached the upper 80s along the Wasatch Front, according to KSL Meteorologist Kristen Van Dyke.
