SALT LAKE CITY — The National Weather Service issued a warning of the potential for northern Utah storms on Tuesday, June 10.

According to an X post from the NWS’ Salt Lake City office, the level of risk is “marginal” across northern Utah and parts of southwestern Wyoming.

A photo posted to X by the National Weather Service Salt Lake City office said northern Utah storms were possible on June 10, 2025. The risk sat at "marginal" on their scale.

Although the risk is on the low end of the NWS’ scale, this type of weather event can be dangerous. The post urged people to move inside if they see a storm rolling in.

The post explained the northern Utah storms could bring wind gusts, small to medium-sized hail, and lightning.

Signs Utah storms are coming

If you choose to go outside when storms are in the forecast, keep an eye out for warning signs that they’re approaching. According to the NWS, the sky will often grow darker and cloudier. The wind may pick up and temperatures are likely to drop.

Even if you don’t hear thunder or see lightning, you should get inside a building or hard-topped vehicle. Tents, gazebos, and baseball dugouts are not safe structures. According to the Centers for Disease Control, you can still be struck by lightning when inside of them.

Bring pets indoors when you shelter, too.

And remain sheltered for at least 30 minutes following a storm to ensure that it is over.

What if I get stuck outside during a lightning storm?

If you get stuck outside during a storm, there are a few things you can do to lower your risk of being hit by lightning.

During a thunder storm, the CDC recommended avoiding elevated areas like hills and peaks. Avoid sheltering beneath a single tree, opting for a group of lower trees instead. Similarly, do not shelter below rocky outcrops or under cliffs.

If you’re with a group, spread out to reduce the number of injuries if someone does get hit by lightning. Separate yourself from any metal you may be carrying, too. Metal conducts electricity and can attract lightning.

Additionally, remain out of and away from bodies of water as well as wide-open spaces, such as meadows and golf courses.

If you’re on a boat when you see a storm, immediately proceed back to the shore. Remain at least 100 yards away from the water for the duration of the storm.

After finding a place to wait out the storm, crouch low, but avoid lying down flat. The U.S. Forest Service said you should also keep your head down.

What to do if you get stuck in Utah hail storms

When a hail storm begins, it’s essential to find shelter that will protect you from the falling ice, which could cause severe injury.

If you can’t make it to shelter before a hail storm begins, the U.S. Forest Service recommended finding something to protect your body, or at the very least, your head.

Although it’s not recommended to shelter beneath a tree because branches can break off, they can be used as a last resort. Avoid standing under large, single trees in case lightning begins.

In contrast to lightning storm safety, it is recommended that you stay out of lower areas that can fill quickly with water.

If you’re driving when a hail storm hits, pull over in an area that’s free of trees and power lines. Keep your eyes shielded and head low in case a chunk of ice breaks your car’s windows.
