Truck crashes into American Fork barbershop, seriously injuring 1 person

SALT LAKE CITY — One person was seriously injured after a pickup truck crashed into a barbershop building in American Fork on Friday morning, according to police and fire officials.

Chief Brandon Boshard with American Fork Fire said just after 10 a.m., a Ford F150 crashed into Anvil Barber Co. on 52. E. Main Street.

Later, Lt. Ryan Archuleta with American Fork police said there were two men inside the building — one of them was taken in an ambulance to Utah Valley Hospital with a serious leg injury and the other drove himself to the hospital with minor injuries.

The driver, Archuleta said, was a man in his 70s who mistook the gas pedal for the brake pedal. The man appeared to be unharmed, and police did not believe drugs or alcohol to be a factor in the crash.

Boshard said the truck was completely in the building and not visible from the outside. Because of the threat it posed for a possible hazmat situation, he said special response teams with Enbridge Gas were inspecting the scene. Rocky Mountain Power also responded, and several fire agencies were at the scene while crews worked to stabilize the building.

The building was connected to other businesses next door, he said, but they were not damaged. Although, the entire strip mall would be affected through the weekend.

American Fork Main Street was shut down, Boshard said, but crews were about to reopen it just before 11:30 a.m.
