SALT LAKE CITY — After a tow truck driver reported being shot at on Sunday night, a police chase and subsequent shooting left the suspect in critical condition, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
Det. Michael Ruff with SLCPD said at approximately 10:45 p.m., the tow truck driver called police, saying someone shot at him and then fled. Officers located the car and suspected shooter, a 44-year-old man.
During their search, the man began to fire shots at them, Ruff said, and officers began chasing the driver. The man continued to fire shots as they drove, and officers returned fire, Ruff said.
Police successfully performed a pit maneuver was to stop the suspected shooter on I-80, and the man stopped driving. However, both he and the officers continued to exchange gunfire.
The man was hit at least once and taken to the hospital in critical condition, Ruff said.
As of 5:45 a.m. on Monday, the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 were still closed between 5600 West and Redwood Road. Lanes were reopened just before 8 a.m.
Due to standard protocol, five officers were placed on administrative leave and West Jordan police were set to lead the investigation from this point, Ruff said.
