42-year-old West Jordan man missing in Tooele County canyon

STOCKTON, Tooele County — A 42-year-old man who went missing Monday after leaving a campsite in Soldier Canyon has been found dead in the Jacob City area on Wednesday, according to the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office.

Sgt. Dane Lerdahl with the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office said the man was identified as Chad Burningham of West Jordan. Lerdahl said he left a campsite in Soldier Canyon near Jacob City at approximately 8 a.m. and had not been seen since.

Search and rescue crews began searching for him after he did not return at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Burningham was wearing khaki shorts and either a blue or white hoodie. Lerdahl described him as a white man, average height with facial hair.

Lerdahl said the terrain covered a large area, and depending on which direction he had walked, there could have been some big elevation changes that crews would need to look through.

The investigation of his death is ongoing.
