Car crashes into Sandy home; police say driver was in stolen vehicle

SANDY — A car crashed into a Sandy home Thursday, and police said the driver was in a stolen vehicle. Nobody inside the home was injured.

Police documents say 20-year-old Aaron Jasper Aumale was driving. When officers arrived at the Sandy home in the area of 10200 South and 2200 East, they said Aumale wasn’t able to tell them who owned the car he was driving.

The documents also said that before Aumale attempted to drive away from the scene before police arrived, but the car he was driving was damaged and couldn’t move.

Sgt. Greg Moffit with the Sandy Police Department said the home Aumale allegedly crashed into received only minor damage.

“According to (Aumale) he had gotten the car sometime overnight from a guy named Joe,” a probable cause statement said. “Aaron was unable to state who Joe was and that he had gotten the car somewhere from Joe in West Valley City.”

The statement said police determined the actual owner of the car and told Aumale. He said he didn’t know that person. The car’s owner had called West Jordan Police to report her car was stolen from her home, the statement said.

Officers asked Aumale if he had identification, and the statement said he did not. Police saw two credit cards in his bag and asked if those had his name on them, but Aumale said they didn’t because they weren’t his, according to the documents.

“The owner of the 2 credit cards was contacted, who lives in West Valley,” the statement said. “She stated her vehicle had been broken into overnight and her credit cards were stolen.”

The documents said the victim of that theft sent a video to police that showed Aumale breaking into her car. He was recognizable in that video because he was still wearing the same clothes, the statement said.

Police found a syringe in Aumale’s bag, according to the statement.

“The suspect has shown a complete disregard for public safety following a multiple-city crime spree culminating in a car crash into a home, where thankfully no one was hurt inside,” the statement said.

Police documents said Aumale doesn’t live in the Wasatch Front, and has a residence in St. George. He reportedly told police he spends time in Las Vegas, and police argued that he shouldn’t be released from jail due to the likelihood that he would flee the state.

Aumale was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail accused of recieving or transfer of a stolen vehicle and two counts of unlawful possession of a financial card, all felonies. He’s also accused of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance and driving on a suspended or revoked license.
