Drivers are now using a new US 191 roadway alignment

SALT LAKE CITY — Traffic is now being diverted onto a new alignment on U.S. Highway 191 after crews first began working on a realignment project for the roadway in March 2024.
The Utah Department of Transportation said in a news release on Thursday that traffic speeds are being reduced and will be moving on a single lane in both directions as construction continues.
“The passing lanes will remain closed until work is completed,” UDOT said. “Drivers can expect minor slowdowns in the area as crews are still working to complete the new road. Motorists are advised to stay alert and remain cautious as they drive through the active work zone.”
What is the realignment project?
“The US-191 Realignment Project is replacing the 2.6-mile switchback portion of the highway located 12 miles north of Vernal with an alignment with fewer turns and standard horizontal curves,” UDOT said.
According to UDOT, the new alignment is expected to allow drivers to pass others at a safer speed, help vehicles maintain a consistent speed, and add a new emergency truck ramp for more safety on the road.
Work on the new alignment is expected to be completed sometime in October.
