Second juvenile arrested for killing of Ben Lomond High School student

SALT LAKE CITY — A second person was arrested and extradited back to Utah for the homicide of a Ben Lomond High School student in October.
On Thursday, the Ogden Police Department said the second juvenile suspect was taken into custody in Denver, Colorado, by local law enforcement on Oct. 13.
“The individual has since been transported to Utah and is currently being held in a juvenile detention center pending charges associated with this case,” Ogden PD said in a press release.
On Oct. 7, police responded to a shooting near the high school and found 16-year-old Mason Caballero shot and killed.

According to court documents, Mason was in the back seat of a car with two other people at the time he was shot.
“Investigators learned from witnesses and video surveillance that the victim vehicle was approaching 5th Street and Gramercy Avenue … When they began getting shot at by the occupants of a black vehicle which was following them,” the arrest warrant stated.
Mason’s vehicle was shot at twice, with one of the bullets passing through the car, striking and killing the teenager. The second bullet nearly hit the driver, according to the warrant.
The warrant stated that surveillance footage from the scene of the shooting showed a man driving a black sedan, leaning out of the driver’s side door and firing a handgun at Mason’s vehicle.
Police identified the car’s owner, who told investigators he had given it to 16-year-old Isaias Emanuel Carranza. Cell phone data also placed Carranza in the area of the shooting when it happened, according to his arrest warrant.

The warrant said that Carranza is affiliated with the 18th Street gang and that he attended Ogden High School. The front passenger of Mason’s car was a “dropout” of that gang and had been “targeted by his former gang members because of this.”
A few days later, police arrested Carranza and prosecutors charged him as an adult for murder.
According to Ogden PD, with Carranza and the second juvenile in custody, there are no other outstanding suspects in this homicide investigation.
“Over the past several weeks, Ogden City Police Department detectives have continued to follow up on leads and information developed throughout the investigation,” police said. “The Ogden City Police Department appreciates the assistance of all partner agencies and the continued cooperation of the Ogden community as investigators worked to bring both suspects into custody.”
