WEST VALLEY CITY — A man is dead after police say he fired shots into a group of people while driving by a Halloween party early Saturday morning in West Valley City. Somebody in the group then fired back.
The West Valley City Police Department said officers responded to reports of shots fired at 12:40 a.m. in the area of 4700 West and Palmer Drive.
Police said around two dozen teens and adults were attending a party, and a group of them was standing outside. Police said 18-year-old Allen Montelongo of Salt Lake City fired shots at the group while driving past. Then, officers said, someone fired back at Montelongo and hit him.
“Montelongo crashed into a fence and was pronounced dead on scene,” police said.
A 16-year-old boy from Sandy who was standing with the group was shot multiple times, police said, but he was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
Marci Bonham, whose parents live nearby, said she heard the gunshots.
“We heard like a pop, pop, pop,” Bonham told KSL TV, “and then what sounded like garbage cans rolling over.”
Bonham said she went outside and saw the vehicle that crashed into the fence, with a body lying outside it.
“I think it’s really sad that these young people are shooting each other, that they’re continually getting shot,” Bonham said. “There’s too much violence, too much gun violence.”
West Valley City police said the shooting appeared to be targeted, and there is no threat to the community.
“All relevant parties have been identified, and any applicable charges will be screened as appropriate. The shooting appears to be targeted with no outstanding threat to the community,” police said.
