Officials identify driver fatally shot by police following traffic incident on I-15

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Public Safety has identified a person that was shot and killed by a Utah Highway Patrol Trooper last week, following an incident on northbound Interstate 15.
In a statement, the suspect was identified as Sayed Mousavi, age 29, from Sandy, Utah.
The shooting occurred Friday afternoon, March 27, after a UHP trooper was rear-ended by a Mousavi, according to Commissioner Beau Mason with the Utah Department of Public Safety.
After being rear-ended, the trooper chased Mousavi, who eventually stopped his vehicle before 3300 South in the middle of the freeway.
Following this, Mason said, Mousavi pulled out a knife, and the trooper shot him. The driver received medical aid but died on the scene. The trooper was uninjured.
The incident and the ensuing police investigation closed the roadway for several hours.
The trooper involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave while the investigation is carried out.
This is the second police shooting on I-15 in March 2026.
