Man found dead after shooting in West Point

SALT LAKE CITY — Police in Davis County blocked off a road after reports of a shooting in a neighborhood in West Point on Saturday.

The Davis County Sheriff’s Office said the call came in around 6:25 p.m. Saturday evening. Upon arrival, police said they found a man dead on a porch in the neighborhood.

On Sunday, the sheriff’s office identified the man as 71-year-old James Witten. No one was in custody in connection with the death, and the incident was investigated as a homicide.

Megan Maybee with the Davis County Sheriff’s Office said a maroon Honda Civic with an orange cover over the rear license plate was last seen driving north on 2000 West turning east onto 300 North. This vehicle is allegedly connected to the incident.

A medical transport helicopter landed close to the West Point Smith’s Marketplace. Police said they don’t believe there was an ongoing threat to the public.

Police told members of the public to not approach the vehicle if they saw it, but instead to contact the Davis County Sheriff’s Office.
