Taylorsville police shoot, kill man armed with knife during burglary investigation

TAYLORSVILLE — Taylorsville police shot and killed a man armed with a knife late Sunday while investigating a possible burglary and stabbing.

Officers responded about 10:30 p.m. to a report of a possible burglary at the Callaway Apartments, 1141 W. 3900 South. A 32-year-old man called 911 to report that someone was banging on his apartment door and the tenant believed the person was trying to get into his apartment, said Taylorsville Police Lt Aaron Cheshire.

While police were en route, the man updated the 911dispatcher that he had been stabbed, Cheshire said. Based on preliminary information, investigators believe the man may have opened the door to find out what was happening, was stabbed, and then quickly shut and locked the door.

When officers arrived at the complex, they found a 23-year-old man armed with a knife walking down the stairway from apartment. The man was shot and killed by two officers following a confrontation and ignoring multiple commands to stop and drop the knife, Cheshire said.

Cheshire said the deceased man lived in the same apartment complex. Additional information about him, including his name, was not immediately released. Investigators were still investigating Monday whether the man and the stabbing victim had any prior association.

The tenant who had called 911 was found inside his apartment in critical condition with a stab wound to his chest/torso area, Cheshire said. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment and was at last word “stable,” according to police.
