Free clinics helping Dreamers in Utah

Sep 28, 2017, 9:39 AM | Updated: 9:39 am

PROVO — The law school at Brigham Young University is holding a free legal clinic aimed at helping recipients of the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA.

So-called “Dreamers” whose DACA status expires this year have until October 5th to finish paperwork to renew.

BYU law professor Carl Hernandez says Utah’s colleges and universities care deeply about the DACA recipients at their institutions.

“We’ve heard from others in the community that students are scrambling to try to find ways of making sure their renewals are properly processed,” he says, “so we are here to answer any questions.”

BYU law students and professors will be at the clinic Thursday night at the Deseret Industries in Provo.

The University of Utah law school also does regular clinics every month in Ogden, Salt Lake and Sugarhouse. They say any immigrant or refugee can come get free legal advice, and often in their own language.

“There is a tremendous problem with access to legal services,” said Hernandez.
