SL police say shooting followed dynamic, violent encounter

Sep 29, 2017, 3:07 PM

(SALT LAKE CITY) — Police say an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead and two officers injured began with the report of an assault.  Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown today said the officers involved, have now been released from the hospital and one is on paid administrative leave.

Brown said it began when the suspect, 49-year old Michael Bruce Peterson, entered a salon near 500 E. and 300 South at about 3pm on Thursday.  He said Peterson grabbed a female co-worker then began moving through the salon before lying on a table and refusing to leave.  He said Peterson also tried to grab a telephone out of the hand of a woman who was calling police.

Brown said the officers encountered Peterson after he had left the salon, in the parking lot of a store. “This was a very violent, dynamic, intense encounter,” said Brown.  “There were all levels of use of force being enacted in this

“This was a very violent, dynamic, intense encounter,” said Brown.  “There were all levels of use of force being enacted in this situation.”

Brown said that included the use of a taser, an impact baton and gunfire.

During the scuffle, one of the officers suffered a broken nose and a broken ankle, Brown said.

Brown asked that the public be patient while West Valley Police investigate the shooting, and asked that anyone with information call police.

Peterson had a long criminal history and most recently had been paroled from a half-way house.
