SALT LAKE CITY — The mother of a West Valley City police officer who was killed in the line of duty spoke through tears at the sentencing of three teens accused in his death.

Jenny Brotherson told the judge her son, Officer Cody Brotherson, dreamed of becoming a policeman and keeping others safe.

“[They] are the exact opposite of everything Cody was and everything he stood for,” she said. “They decided Cody’s life was worth less than a stolen car.”

The three juveniles, then 14 and 15, hit the officer with a stolen car on November 6.

The judge ordered them to spend time at a secure care facility, possibly until they are 21.

West Valley City Police Chief Lee Russo and many of Officer Brotherson’s fellow officers attended the hearing.
