Body-worn camera footage of low-speed RV chase is made public

KEARNS, Utah — What started as a traffic stop to let an RV driver know he was dragging a generator cord and that his tip-out, or RV extension, was still open, ended in a fiery crash in a Kearns neighborhood on August 7, 2020.

Today, after body-worn camera footage was released to KSL TV, the public is seeing and hearing what Unified Police officers were dealing with on that day.

A traffic stop, a low-speed chase, an RV on fire

The newly released body-worn camera footage begins with the driver of the RV leaving the scene of a traffic stop. Police said a “slow-speed chase” ensued along 4700 South and ended when the RV drove into the Shadow Ridge Estates mobile home park and crashed into a carport.

At that point people were jumping out of the RV, telling police they didn’t know why the RV had caught fire.

They also didn’t know, at least according to what is heard on the officer’s body-worn camera footage, who was driving the RV.

As flames poured out, Unified police learned that the vehicle was stolen and that other so-called urban campers nearby, were also stolen.

After a police investigation, Joseph Dean Facello, age 44, was charged with two felonies and two misdemeanors. He pleaded guilty on April 28 to a third-degree felony count of receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle. He was given credit for time served.
