Fire in St. George a reminder about fireworks safety and fire awareness

ST. GEORGE, Utah — A brush fire on the hillside above Twin Lakes Drive in St. George may have been caused by fireworks.
St. George Fire Battalion Chief Coty Chadburn told KSL they were called out to the fire late, around 11:00 p.m. By that time it had grown to a half an acre, he said.
It took half an hour to extinguish the flames, and by 1:00 a.m. it was out completely.
Chadburn said that, later, one of the Battalion Chiefs found a fireworks container at the bottom of the hill which could have caused the fire.
Last week the St. George City Council enacted fireworks restrictions, and the area of the fire was under restrictions.
The state of Utah also regulates when fireworks can be set off. They are:
- Chinese New Year’s Eve (January 31 – February 1);
- Independence Day (July 2 – July 5, with extended hours on July 4th);
- Pioneer Day (July 22 – July 25, with extended hours on July 24);
- New Year’s Eve: (December 31)
Chadburn said that the person responsible for fighting this fire could be liable for suppression costs. Right now, officials have no suspects.
