SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Transit Authority is ringing in the month of February with free fares. Along with providing a financial boost for those who rely on public transit, the program is meant to introduce Utahns to a cheaper and greener way of travel around the state.

Free Fare February is an initiative spearheaded by Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall in partnership with the UTA.

As is the case with many businesses, the COVID-19 pandemic changed reality for the transit authority, which reports that ridership has plummeted since March of 2020.

Spokesman Carl Arky said he’s hoping free transit fares will encourage people to give the convenience of public transportation a try.

“We’re excited about this, we’re looking forward to it. We hope it’ll help clean the air, it’ll get more people off the roads, it’ll get a lot accomplished.

February is typically one of the worst months for air quality in Utah.

As KSL NewsRadio previously reported, Free Fare February could be an example of the future of public transportation in Utah. House Bill 164 would make all public transit services free.

The bill is sponsored by Representative Joel K. Briscoe (D – District 25).
