Groundbreaking is set for mental health crisis care center in SLC

SALT LAKE CITY- The Huntsman Mental Health Institute, will break ground Wednesday at noon for its new $34 million crisis care center near 10th West and 33rd South in South Salt Lake City. The mental health crisis center will have room to stabilize 30 patients, plus another 24 inpatient beds. The facility should be ready to receive patients early in 2023.
Doctor Mark Rapaport, CEO of the Huntsman Mental Health Institute and chair of the University of Utah Department of Psychiatry, says patients can expect a different kind of welcome than they might have received in a hospital emergency room or the jail.
“It will provide a level of care that doesn’t exist right now, and also a level of compassion and dignity,” Dr. Rapaport told KSL Newsradio.
In addition to patient care, Dr. Rapaport says the crisis care center will be a place for ongoing research.
“Using this as a place where we can begin to do research about what’s the best model of care for people in crisis,” he said.
The Huntsman Mental Health Institute announced plans earlier this week for a new $150 million Translational Research facility to be built at the University of Utah’s Research Park.
