FARMINGTON, Utah — As correctional officers conducted their hourly safety and security rounds on July 31, they reportedly found a 58-year-old male inmate who was unresponsive.

The inmate was later pronounced dead.

In a statement, Davis County Correctional Facility officials said that officers and medical staff immediately began lifesaving measures. Emergency services including paramedics and ambulance arrived to help the jail staff, but the individual was not resuscitated.

Both internal and external investigations are underway according to Davis County officials. An autopsy from the Medical Examiner’s office is pending, but at this time the death appears to be the result of a medical issue.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends,” said Sheriff Kelly V. Sparks. “Medical staff in the jail work hard to provide the best care possible to those in our care and custody who have medical problems and it always saddens us when outcomes like this occur.”

Davis Behavioral Health is reportedly providing support for other inmates as well as jail employees.
