SALT LAKE CITY — A man was hit by an SUV while walking in the roadway at 1192 East Van Winkle Expressway early Sunday morning.

The victim, a 25-year-old male was walking in a very dark area of the roadway when he was hit by a Nissan SUV. Unified Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Melody Cutler said the driver was driving southbound when he hit the man in the road.

Cutler could not say why the man was walking in the road, but said he lived about a mile near the area and may have been walking home.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The SUV driver remained, was cooperative, and “quite shook up” police said.

“It is very very highly unlikely that the driver will face any charges,” said Cutler.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

This story will be updated.
