One killed, one in critical condition after overnight crash

SALT LAKE CITY – One person was killed and another left in critical condition after multiple cars reportedly crashed in West Valley City overnight.
Sgt. Jeff Smith with the West Valley City Police Department said at approximately 12:58 a.m. Sunday, multiple people called police to report that multiple cars had crashed near 5400 South.
Smith said when police arrived, two people were pinned in one vehicle. One person was declared dead at the scene, and the other person was extricated and was in critical condition, Smith said.
Two other vehicles were involved, Smith said, but the occupants had fled the scene. Witnesses reportedly told police they saw people running north from the intersection where the crash occurred, leaving vehicles disabled in the roadway.
Police believe impairment may have been a factor in the crash, Smith said.
Smith said it took police between four and five hours to locate the other people involved after the crash. Smith reported the driver, who “appears to be at fault right now,” was in police custody Sunday morning.
The intersection of 5400 South was closed Sunday morning due to the crash, Smith said.
